Obama Caught With His Shield Down

Obama announced on Sept. 17 that he will scrap Bush's plans for a land-based missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. He claims it will be replaced with a ship-based system and, in response to critics, that the system must be updated because of recent intelligence out of Iran.
However, there has been recent information that does not negate the possibility of an Iranian long-range missile or even nuclear weapon acquisition. In fact, Washington's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency warned on Sept. 10 that Iran is now either very near or in possession of "enough material to make a nuclear weapon." Critics accuse Obama of caving to Russia, whose government has been unhappy with the close proximity of Bush's system to their satellite countries.
"Not only does this decision leave America vulnerable to the growing Iranian long-range missile threat, it also turns back the clock to the days of the Cold War, when Eastern Europe was considered the domain of Russia," says Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ). "The message the administration sends today is clear: the United States will not stand behind its friends and views 're-setting' relations with Russia more important."
 Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told Polish radio, "It was an autonomous decision taken by…Obama" that did not involve the Polish government. President Lech Kaczynski, who found out about Obama's plans through a news report, is concerned this will leave his country in a dangerous "gray zone" between Western Europe and the Soviets. And an editorial in Hospodarske Novine, a Czech paper, stated, "…an ally we rely on has betrayed us, and exchanged us for its own better relations with Russia, of which we are rightly afraid."
Obama has tried reassurance: "Together we are committed to…[strengthening] our collective defense, and we are bound by the solemn commitment of NATO's Article 5 that an attack on one is an attack on all." This sounds heartening, but Obama is not eager to anger his antiwar base. At the point of this writing he has not even made a decision about Gen. McChrystal's request for more troops in Afghanistan. Instead he goes to Copenhagen and fails to secure Chicago as the site of the Olympics in 2016. Meanwhile our troops are desperate for reinforcements. Thus, his promises for swift retribution if our allies are attacked, even for the construction of an updated system, are hard to believe.
This is blatant appeasement of Putin and Ahmadinejad at our friends' expense. A land-based system would have been both a physical protector and a psychological reminder that the U.S. will not tolerate threats to our allies. However, Obama sends a signal that America cannot be relied on to stand up to Russian aggression and Iranian threats.
Furthermore, where is the logic in appeasing Russia because appeasement of Iran is not working? In fact, Russia has recently sold weapons to Iran. But Obama sits idly by and continues to weaken our defense and military while making a mockery of our foreign policy. The U.S. is becoming the puppet of both Russia and Iran at the expense of both our allies' safety and our own. This can only bode unwell for the future of our security.
