Although a violent insurgency has made the transition to a free democratic society in Iraq a difficult prolonged process,
key events have occurred that are quite remarkable. There have been three free elections held in Iraq - the first in January 2005
for a National Assembly preliminary government, the second in October 2005 for a new Constitution,
and the last in December 2005 for a permanent government. Moreover, a state sponsor of global terrorism has been eliminated.
The Oil-For-Food program is no longer being used to buy weapons and fund terror. Saddam Hussein himself has been executed for a host of crimes.
The Iraqi police and military are being retrained to deal with security and random violence.
