As the same sex marriage debate once again comes to a head, I'm reminded of the Queen song from the 70's "I'm In Love With My Car". In case you don't remember it, watch the video at the end of this post. Great tune!
This is not a civil rights debate. This is not a human rights debate. This is not a case of equal opportunity or discrimination. Quite frankly, we're considering re-defining an institution that has formed the foundation of civilized societies since the beginning of time to accommodate a lifestyle choice!
What gays do on their own time and in their own bedrooms is nobody's business. But, when it comes to convoluting a societal norm that exists for specific reasons and for specific purposes - simply to cater to a large lobbying group - everyone is negatively effected. It represents the further erosion of the important stability traditional families provide, which we can all agree needs no additional devaluing.
Open up marriage privileges to same sex couples, and you are eventually going to have to allow any fringe group that comes down the pike to marry as well. After all, we can't discriminate, right? What about the polygamists? What about those who want to marry inanimate objects? How about marrying a relative? Some folks are really passionate about their pets. Or their cars. We're about to see the law of unintended consequences in full throttle! Or, maybe these consequences are intended?
Yeh, traditional marriages fail. Sometimes the environment they produce is hostile and unworkable. People get married for the wrong reasons all the time. People are unfaithful in their marriage. But as history and statistics show us, traditional marriage is the best defense against childhood poverty and delinquency, two problems made worse by the undermining of traditional marriage - primarily by the American left. Inch by inch, sometimes in the cover of darkness, this country's foundation is being dismantled.
